The ranch we now call Reid Cattle Company was purchased from Lewis Brooks in the fall of 1957. George and Jean began running cattle here with their young twins John and Mary. The ranch saw its first Charolais cows in 1969 with a herd from Jack Lamb under a share agreement. George and John imported Limousin semen and began to breed up a registered herd. The first bulls were taken to Denver and sold as yearlings in 1970. The ranch was incorporated in 1971.

Janell Rodgers came to be John’s wife in 1973 and they came back from college to continue ranching. The Charolais and Limousin herds continued to build along with a commercial herd. In 1975 and then 1978 Sara and Chip became the third generation on the ranch. With growing herds and bettering genetics, Reid Cattle Company started hosting its first official bull sale in 1983 selling only Limousin sires with a sale average of $1580. 1986 produced the first printed catalog. Charolais sires were added to the sale two years later.

Chip married Nikki Taylor in 2000, and in 2001 she talked the ranch into sending bulls to the National Western Stock Show the following January. The ranch enjoyed the NWSS for four years. More additions were made, Maggie was born in 2003 then Shane in 2006. A drought began at the ranch in 2002 and by 2011 the decision to sell down the Limousin herd was made, keeping just a few cows. However, during that time, in 2009, Great-Grandpa Frank Rodgers brought two registered Polled Herefords to the ranch for Maggie and Shane. The youngest generation has started M&S Polled Herefords.

Reid Cattle Company has always focused our program on the commercial cattleman. We provide two-year-old seedstock bulls and this year will be hosting our 40th sale at La Junta Livestock Commission in La Junta CO, February 26, 2022. We will be offering Charolais and Polled Hereford bulls, and 2 Polled Hereford bred heifers.
